A Brief History of the French language
French (Français) is one of the five main Romance languages that descended from Latin (the other four are: Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish).
The language is believed to be brought in the regions of modern-day France and Belgium which were once included in an ancient region of Western Europe, known as Gaul. When Gaul witnessed Roman conquest in 1st century BC, the Gaulish language (which was a Celtic language) came under the influence- hence the true meaning of a ‘Romance language’ as “to speak in Roman fashion.”

Fact: While you might be wondering that because French sounds “romantic” it is then qualified as a romance language, that’s actually not the case. The phrase is derived from the Latin terms, “romanica loqui,” translation: to speak in Roman fashion.
