About Igbo Language

Igbo is one of the major languages of Nigeria, spoken by over 25 million native speakers primarily in the southeastern region of the country. It is a Niger-Congo language within the Volta-Niger branch and serves as a key cultural identifier for the Igbo people. Igbo is known for its tonal nature, with varying tones giving different meanings to words. The language has numerous dialects, but efforts have been made to standardize it for education and literature. It is written using the Latin alphabet and is celebrated for its rich oral traditions, proverbs, folktales, and music, which play a vital role in preserving Igbo heritage.

SDH – Subtitles for the deaf or hard-of-hearing & Closed Captions

Subtitles for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing (SDH) is a recent invention in the world of video accessibility. The service is a mix of both subtitles and closed captions where both audio and language information are combined to create one subtitle file. SDH not only just contains the transcription of the dialogues but also includes other sounds in the video such as background noises, relevant music, and other audio cues, which helps the deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers to understand better what is happening in the video.

SDH is intended for foreign-language audiences who may also be deaf or hard-of-hearing or people who are learning a new language.

For example, if the video is in German and the audience is English-speaking, then the SDH will be translated from German to English, also incorporating any audible information, thus reaching a much wider audience.
