Indian English is a group of English dialects which is spoken among Indian people widely in India. It is used by the government of India for communication along with modern standard Hindi as preserved in the constitution of India. It is official language in seven states and seven union territories of India. Indian English is solely the official language of Indian judiciary, unless the higher authorities of India, President of India, Governor of India, or legislature approves for the use of regional language in the courts. Indian English was broadly referred to South Asian English and was also called British Indian English before the dissolution of British empire on the Indian subcontinent. According to recent records, 0.1% of Indian population speaks English as their first language and around 30% can speak Indian English to some extent. Yule and Brunell’s Hobson-Jobson is the most famous dictionary of Indian English which was originally published in 1886 with an expanded edition edited by William Crooke in 1903.
