The current COVID-19 crisis has changed learning forever. Schools, colleges, educational institutions, offices are shut all across the world. As a result, education and learning have changed drastically, with a remarkable rise in e-learning, whereby learning sessions are being conducted remotely via digital platforms.

The nationwide lockdowns have impacted over 60% of the world’s student population. Countries are trying to alleviate the immediate impact of school closures by conducting remote learning sessions – educational videos, e-learning modules, tutorials, e-learning narration, podcasts, webinars, audiobooks, etc.

Similarly, corporate e-learning is on the rise too. Employees are working remotely, all meetings/conferences, employee training, induction sessions, product training, sales presentations, workshops are being conducted with the help of e-learning video content. In the current scenario, corporate e-learning is saving 40%-60% of the time as compared to traditional learning. According to sources (Business Wire), the corporate e-learning market is expected to increase by $38.09 billion between 2020 and 2024.

What are Subtitles?
Subtitles are a textual representation of dialogues and some on-screen text in the same or any other foreign language. Subtitles are mostly applicable and used for pre-recorded videos, such as films, TV shows, eLearning videos, employee training videos, etc. This form of audiovisual translation/localization is well known as subtitling.
Types of subtitling
Subtitling has many forms, functions, and audiences. Its types can be broadly divided into the following categories:
  • Intralingual subtitling

Intralingual subtitling is the process of subtitling within the same language that is being spoken. This type of subtitling service is mainly targeted at the deaf and hard of hearing audience, language learners, etc.

  • Interlingual subtitling

Interlingual subtitling, on the other hand, is the process of subtitling between two languages (i.e. in a language besides the spoken one).

SDH- Subtitles for the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing
Subtitles for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing (SDH) is a mix of both subtitles and closed captions. Normal subtitles are designed keeping in mind the viewer can hear the audio but does not understand the spoken language, however, SDH assumes that the viewer cannot hear the audio. SDH not only just contains the transcription of the dialogues but also includes other sounds in the video such as background noises, relevant music, and other audio cues.
SDH is intended for viewers who are both Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and non-native speakers of the language being used in the video, or people who are learning a new language.

For example, if the video is in Italian and the audience is English speaking, then the SDH will be translated from Italian to English, also incorporating any audible information.
