A Brief History of the German Language
German (Deutsche) is a West Germanic language that is believed to have evolved around 2000 B.C., as people began to settle in western areas of the Baltic Sea.
The language has gone through some major changes, from Old High German (from about 700 AD – 11 century); Middle High German (from about 1050 – 1350); Early New High German (1350 – k 1600) to New High German (from about 1600 – the present).
As with many languages, the German language has also evolved with society and sociopolitical factors. New words from other languages have been adopted by German speakers that have also helped shape the language as it is today.
