What is the difference between ASL interpretation and closed captioning?
Closed captions are a text-based representation of spoken audio, designed primarily for people who are hard-of-hearing or for environments where audio cannot be played. ASL interpretation provides access through American Sign Language — a fully distinct visual language with its own grammar, syntax, and cultural conventions — and is the native language of many Deaf viewers. For the Deaf community, ASL interpretation provides a fundamentally different and often more accessible experience than reading captions in English, which is frequently a second language. Is ASL interpretation required by law for OTT platforms?
Currently, US law requires closed captioning for online video content that was broadcast on television (under the CVAA), but does not mandate ASL interpretation for OTT platforms. However, WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.2.6 designates sign language interpretation as a AAA-level requirement for prerecorded content, and the DOJ’s 2024 ADA web rule increases the legal exposure for platforms that are not comprehensively accessible. Many platforms are adopting ASL proactively ahead of anticipated regulatory changes and in response to growing audience and advocacy group expectations.
What is a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) and when do you use one?
A Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) is a Deaf person who has obtained specialized certification in ASL interpreting and is qualified to work in interpreting settings. CDIs are considered highest-accuracy for Deaf audiences because ASL is their native language. DUBnSUB uses CDIs for high-stakes content including legal and medical programming, content aimed directly at Deaf children, emotionally sensitive narratives, and comedy content where cultural nuance is particularly important. For standard dramatic and news content, RID-certified hearing interpreters with strong Deaf community ties are typically used alongside Deaf-led QC.
Can DUBnSUB handle sign languages other than ASL?
Yes. While American Sign Language is our primary offering and the language for which we have the deepest bench of certified interpreters and Deaf QC reviewers, DUBnSUB also provides British Sign Language (BSL), Auslan (Australian Sign Language), Langue des signes française (LSF), Deutsche Gebärdensprache (DGS), Indian Sign Language (ISL), and several other national sign languages through our global interpreter network.
