Cantonese language is a language in the Chinese branch of Sino-Tibetan languages family which has originated from the city of Guangzhou which is historically known as Canton. Cantonese refers to the prestige variety and it is often used to refer to the whole Yue subgroup of Chinese. In southeastern China, Hong Kong, Macau as well as in overseas communities Cantonese is viewed as vital and inseparable part of cultural identity of its native speakers. It is the dominant and co-official language of Hong Kong and Macau. It is also widely spoken among overseas Chinese in southeast Asia and throughout the western world. Cantonese share much of its vocabulary with Mandarin and other varieties of Chinese and they are not mutually intelligible. Cantonese emerged as the prestige variety when the port of Guangzhou on the Pearl River delta became the largest port in China. It is spoken by more than 55 million people in Guangdong and the southern Guangxi provinces of China including the important cities of Canton, Hong Kong, and Macau. Throughout the world it is spoken by almost 75 million people. Many Chinese immigrants spoke Cantonese before the mid-20t^h century.
